How does receipt scanning work?
Just take a photo of any receipt and our AI-powered OCR extracts every line item, tax, and tip automatically. You can then split by item, shares, or percentages. Free users get 5 scans per month, Pro users get unlimited scanning.
Is my financial data secure?
Absolutely. We use bank-level encryption for all data transmission and storage. We never store your payment credentials—settlements happen directly between users or through your preferred payment method.
Which currencies does PayMates support?
We currently support USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, and INR with live exchange rates. Pro users can split expenses across any of these currencies automatically, perfect for international trips or cross-border friendships.
Can I split bills in different ways?
Yes! Choose from equal splits, exact amounts, percentage shares, item-by-item, or custom shares. You can mix methods on the same bill—split appetizers equally and mains by item.
How do settlements work?
PayMates calculates who owes what and optimizes the fewest number of transfers needed. You can settle individual balances or all at once. We provide payment links but you complete the actual transfer using your preferred method (Venmo, Zelle, cash, etc.).
Do all my friends need the app?
No! You can create bills and track expenses even if others don't have PayMates. They'll receive notifications and can view their balances via web link. However, the best experience comes when everyone uses the app.
Is PayMates available on Android?
Currently PayMates is available on iOS (iPhone and iPad). An Android version is in development and will be released soon. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified when Android launches.
Can I export my expense history?
Yes! You can view detailed expense reports within the app, filtered by person, group, category, or date range. CSV export functionality is coming soon.
What if someone doesn't pay me back?
PayMates includes gentle payment reminders you can send (max once per day to prevent spam). We maintain a transparent history of all bills and settlements, so everyone can see outstanding balances clearly.
